The bakery is closed

Posted By on Tue, Jun 30, 2009 at 11:05 AM

"When you gonna let me sample the goodies?"

You're familiar with the saying "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet,” — that’s Shakespeare for you non-reading folks.

The Goodies, peach cobbler, cookies, cream puffs or whatever you call the female genitalia — it's still the same — but stepping to a female uttering a sentence is above and beyond disrespectful. ESPECIALLY in the 25 and up crowd.

My response: The bakery is closed.

Whatever happened to the days of getting to know someone and letting things progress naturally until you decide the man is worthy of the peach cobbler? Maybe there's a permanent full moon that's out in 2009 that allows these fools to utter the words—“when you gonna let me hit that, cause I can do this and I'm working with that.”

Blink. Blink.

Are you kidding me?

I'm sorry, but I think the women are going to have to take a hit on this one. It's a vicious cycle:

I blame those chicks out there that find this bullshit cute and see nothing wrong with keeping the bakery open 24/7 letting folks sample the pastries.

Then in turn, those same men think the next chick they meet will have the same philosophy and allow him to come right on in and put his finger and other unmentionables in the pudding.

So no wonder diseases run rampant these days.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around the women that turn these fools down that get the response "oh you must not like sex” or “you must be a lesbian."

Say what?

Just because some of us have self-esteem and value our bakeries then we have the issues?

I'd rather have my sweets in tact and be able to look myself in the mirror the next day in all my prettiness, rather than have to deal with the ish that comes with jumping in the sack with someone I know nothing about.

So excuse us for having standards and not willing to just leave the door unlocked for you to stick the doughnut and leave your glaze all over it only to turn around and do it to someone else tomorrow.

Lesson Learned: Fellas, it's 2009, you’ve got to do better. Many of you wonder why you can't find a good woman. Take a step back, look at how you approach us and think to yourself: would you want your mother, sister, cousin, or even daughter to drop the panties for lame lines like that? No, I think not. You'd want them to keep the bakery locked up tight with the key in a safe until the time is right.

Ladies, we as women deserve to be celebrated rather than treated like an old stale lemon cake. If these men want to satisfy their sweet tooth without handling their biz the correct way, then politely remind them: They have two good hands, use them.

We're in HIV/AIDS central

If you don't know your status or you're not practicing safe sex, do me a favor, take a ride up the elevator of the tallest building in Uptown Charlotte and jump.

You're obviously a risk taker.

You don't care if you live or die.

An article on CNN.com says that the Southeast United States ( not Africa, but America, where we live) has the highest concentration of HIV and AIDS cases.

AIDS experts in the region say that access to health care, especially when it comes to screening, is a major problem in rural communities.

In the Southeast, people with HIV tend to get tested late, after they have become sick, partly because of stigma, said Kathie Hiers, executive director of AIDS Alabama in Birmingham.

"If you look at access to health care and almost any kind of health care report card, the South is the worst," she said.

With little or no public transportation, people in non-metropolitan areas are at a disadvantage when they need to see a particular kind of doctor, experts say. There is also a shortage of doctors who deal with HIV in the region, Hiers said.

Here in Charlotte, our public transportation might be sketchy, but you can hop on a bus or light rail and head to the Metrolina AIDS Project and get test on Friday evenings at 5 p.m. It's free and you get your results instantly.

We're not alone in the HIV/AIDS epidemic, according to the article, the Northeast has a high rate of the HIV/AIDS as well:

The Northeast also has a heavy burden of HIV/AIDS cases nationally, atlas collaborators said. Other states with high numbers of counties with high HIV prevalence included Florida, New York and South Carolina.

The atlas, the first of its kind to map out HIV and AIDS at the level of counties, launched in time for Saturday's HIV/AIDS Testing Day. The National Institutes of Health is encouraging everyone age 13 to 64 to get tested for HIV as part of routine health care.

Know your status and protect yourself.

Magic Johnson rolls into Charlotte for HIV testing, sort of.

Posted By on Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 9:35 AM

The Magic Johnson Testing Van is coming to Charlotte today to provide free HIV testing. While the NBA hall of famer won't be here, his mug is on the side of the van.

Here are the details about the testing event and if you're sexually active, you should probably make plans to go learn your status:

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the nation’s largest non-profit AIDS organization, will partner with the Metrolina AIDS Project to provide free HIV testing through a mobile HIV testing van at the Metrolina Care Network Clinic, 5801 Executive Center Drive, Suite 114, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

In an effort to boost AIDS awareness and HIV prevention and testing efforts in some of the hardest hit regions of the United States, AHF began a three week, fourteen-city cross country HIV testing caravan in one of its popular AHF Mobile HIV Testing Units, which are named in honor of and partnership with HIV positive basketball legend Earvin Magic Johnson, Jr. and actor and AIDS advocate Blair Underwood. The tour kicked-off in Los Angeles on June 8th and culminates with the mobile unit’s arrival in Washington, DC on Saturday, June 27th-National HIV Testing Day. AHF is permanently relocating one of the mobile testing units from Los Angeles to D.C., to provide free, easy-to-access rapid HIV testing in various neighborhoods throughout the nation’s capital, where it was recently reported that the HIV prevalence rate has surged past three percent-higher than in Lagos, Nigeria.

As AHF staffers and HIV testing counselors drive the van from Los Angeles to Washington through many Southern and Eastern states, AHF’s ‘whistle stop’ testing tour will seek to heighten awareness about HIV testing in local communities along the route.

“While making initial plans to transport our brand new, state-of-the-art AHF/Magic Johnson Mobile Testing Unit from Los Angeles to Washington, DC, we hit upon the idea that this cross country road trip presented a unique opportunity to raise awareness about HIV testing, prevention and treatment through specific testing events and community outreach in cities and states along the way,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS Healthcare Foundation. “As a result, AHF partnered with respected local AIDS and community groups in Phoenix, Albuquerque, Houston, New Orleans, Jackson, Mississippi; Pensacola, Florida; Montgomery, Alabama; Jacksonville, Atlanta, Columbia, South Carolina; Charlotte, Norfolk and Washington, DC to host free HIV testing and media events in each of these communities. At the end of the tour, the AHF/Magic Johnson Mobile Testing Unit will remain and operate in Washington, where AHF will also open a free AIDS treatment clinic-our first in that city-later this summer.”

“The beauty of these free mobile HIV testing vans is that AIDS Healthcare Foundation operates them right in the heart of the community-in parking lots of popular retail stores, nearby hip nightclubs and gathering spots, at church events-and they provide the testing, counseling and results all in one session, so people get their test results right away on the same day,” said Blair Underwood, who attended the Los Angeles kick-off event. “It is important that people learn how to avoid becoming infected with HIV; or if they are infected, know their HIV status, and seek medical treatment, if needed. People really need to know their HIV status today. These HIV testing vans provide that opportunity for free in a friendly, no hassle way.”

During the testing tour, AIDS Healthcare Foundation will also present $5,000 grants to each of the local partners AHF is collaborating with along the way. And throughout the course of the 4,220 mile, three week cross country HIV testing tour, HIV testing counselors and AHF staffers will also supply a steady stream of updates, videos and images via new media: YouTube, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter postings from along the route, interviews with local partners, government officials and, when appropriate and available, interviews with people who were tested on the mobile unit.

A fully outfitted 34 foot HIV/AIDS mobile medical treatment clinic that is operated by AHF’s Positive Healthcare in rural areas of north Florida and in the Panhandle joined the HIV testing caravan starting in New Orleans. The van, affectionately dubbed, ‘Bertha,’ will travel on with the AHF/Magic Johnson Testing Unit through the remaining Southern and Eastern states and on to Washington. This mobile clinic will serve as an additional backup HIV testing van along the route. Bertha, however, will return to service as a mobile medical clinic in Florida after the National HIV Testing event in Washington on June 27th.

HIV Statistics in the United States

“Last August, the Centers for Disease Control released new data showing an alarming 40% increase in HIV infections in the US—56,000 new cases each year up from a previous estimate of 40,000 new cases annually,” said Whitney Engeran-Cordova, Director of AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s Public Health Division. “There is no doubt that the South is disproportionately affected by HIV and without adequate resources.  On our trip we want to meet our colleagues in these cities, support agencies in providing testing and do what we can to raise awareness about the genuine need for HIV testing and treatment throughout the region.  The number of new infections in the U.S. is absolutely unacceptable.  We have a responsibility to do what we must to help those with HIV know their status and get linked into care. ”

According to an HIV/AIDS Policy Fact Sheet produced by the Kaiser Family Foundation (“The HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the United States”, updated, February, 2009, with statistics through 2007)

Ten states account for 71% of AIDS cases reported since the beginning of the epidemic. Nine of these states also rank in the top 10 for newly reported cases. Three of the states that the AHF/Magic Johnson Mobile Testing HIV testing Unit will visit on its tour—Texas, Florida, and Georgia—are among these top ten states; together, they account for 21% of the nation’s reported AIDS cases through the end of 2007—or 216,199 cumulative AIDS cases.

The Kaiser Fact Sheet also pointed out:

(AIDS) case rates per 100,000 provide a different measure of the epidemic’s impact, since they reflect the concentration of cases after accounting for differences in population size across states. The District of Columbia has the highest AIDS case rate in the nation. Seven of the top 10 states by AIDS case rate are in the South. The AHF/Magic Johnson Mobile HIV Testing Unit tour will travel to and do HIV testing events in five of these Southern states and areas: Louisiana (, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and the District of Columbia.
