March to the beat of someone else's drum

Posted By on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 10:53 AM

As we get older, we earn more responsibilities ... between work and school, we start to tune out the rest of the world and march to the beat of our own drum. Yet, DrumSTRONG, offers a way to get back in touch with our community- by beating on someone else’s drum!

Scott Swimmer, the founder of DrumSTRONG, reminds us that music is a great unifier. We all have a natural rhythm, so the event plays on that with hand drums, fiddles and flutes- the origins of drumming itself. But the drummers aren’t getting together to just bang out a song or two — DrumSTRONG volunteers come together in the fight against cancer.

One-hundred percent of the profits go to the institutions that benefit cancer research, and the event is in support of everyone who is affected by or helps fight against the disease — that includes survivors, families, doctors, nurses, cancer organizations and the scientists trying to find a cure.

In the past, the drummers have held out for 24 hours. But with each year they push a little further, to where this year they are drumming for 27 hours straight. It really gives a new meaning to rock on. And yes, 27 hours means the event does go over night, so bring your sleeping bag. Think of it like a Bonnaroo for drummers and a good cause — minus the alcohol and pot.

The event will start May 16 at 11 a.m. and go through May 17 at Misty Meadows Farm (between Weddington and Waxhaw on Providence Road). So beat the heat with a drum this summer.
