Shopping for nightlife at Park Shoppes

Posted By on Thu, Jul 29, 2010 at 2:50 PM

I recently reported on the changes at Park Road (Nightlife) Shopping Center and now there's some new nightlife to browse, and apparently a lot of cheap wine at Park Shoppes on the other Park Road. You know, the Park Road that intersects with Park Road. Even my GPS says, "WTF?" when it navigated me there.

Anyway, The Wine Shop has a new self-serve tasting machine, making the wine shop more like an adult candy store. The machine dispenses 12 different bottles of wine at the same time, and using a prepaid card you can dispense an assortment of wine to sample at your selection ... kinda like a vending machine for wine.

The Wine Shop also has free tastings every Friday 5 p.m.- 7 p.m., served from an old-fashioned human pourer.

And next door there's a place you can fill up on more nightlife. Fran's Filling Station ...

Fran will fill you up alright, with peach sangria or their peach-blackberry margarita. You can also try out a Boston Tea Partini, a cocktail concoction made from Sweet Tea Vodka, The Redneck Martini made of wild turkey and sweet vermouth, or their Acai berry martini — so you can consume antioxidants while you kill brain cells. They also serve half-price bottles of wine Monday through Wednesday.

Oh, and they also fill your belly with food, too.

Meanwhile their neighbors Ru San's also has half-price bottles of wines on Wednesdays, and arguably the best sushi in Charlotte. (I wouldn't know, however, because I'm allergic to half the menu. Shellfish gives me superhero powers — when I eat it I morph into Sloth from the Goonies. But I can tell you their rice balls, and wine, are amazing.)

Speaking of sushi, Picses Sushi Bar and Lounge in Metropolitan serves all you can eat sushi for $9 on weekdays during lunch ... if you eat it all. You get charged for your leftovers.

Meanwhile, one shopping center up on Park Road number 2 a new restaurant, a bar has opened. Well, replaced Las Ramblas at least.

The Sunset Grille, a "Shady Place for Sunny People."

This shady neighborhood grill has a far more casual ambiance than that of Las Ramblas, with a menu featuring wood-fired specialty pizzas ... but it still has a full service bar!

Sunset Grille has $2 domestics all summer long, live music by Skate Rink Jukebox every Sunday, and Las Ramblas night —  bringing the bull and your favorite tapas back every Monday and Tuesday night.

And some oldies but goodies on Park Road number 2: The Comet Grill and Ed's Tavern.
