Album Review: Dead Man's Guns' Dead Man's Guns

Independent; Release Date: Jan. 30, 2015

Looking back, that December 2012 End of the World party at the Neighborhood Theatre was more of an End of the Band party. That's the last time Charlotte hip-hop outfit Eyes of the Elders performed as a group. Solo albums by Ricky Radar and BearCat were released around the same time, but all's been quiet from the emcees since then.

Which brings us to Dead Man's Guns, the first new music from Ricky Radar that we've heard in a hot minute. This five-song EP brings this listener's ears back to the old days — you can't expect a rapper to change his flow. Radar still spits fresh verses that bounce off of every topic you want him to share thoughts on — politics, money, partying, life in general.

For this latest project, Radar has teamed up with fellow rapper Conyay Twitty. They have similar styles and flows, which work well in partnership.

The duo's debut kicks off with its first single, "The Turtle Eats the Cobra." Chains rattle, a bass drum kicks while tribal-style chanting by Zachary Gresham helps define the song's borders. Radar's poetic style is still intact, leaving the listener to decipher his meanings between occasional double entendres. "I never thought that I'm the biggest or the baddest or the best, but I hacky-sacked my baggage like a dagger to the chest," he says on the song.

The duo also gets help from former EOE guitarist Boss Jones — contributing slide guitar riffs on "Polka Dots" and some simple rhythms and backing vocals for "College in the '80s."

Dead Man's Guns is a welcomed return for Radar and solid collaboration that shows strength and promise in its handful of tracks.
