"An insanely conservative town"

In Oxford, Miss., there were plenty of Ole Miss students gathered in bars Sept. 30, the night of the first presidential debate. And, almost every bar had a TV set tuned into the debate. But we had a hard time finding someone actually paying attention to John Kerry and George Bush -- until we found the upstairs tavern at the City Grocery eatery.

John Currence, owner/chef of City Grocery: "This is the only place in this town where you'll find a 50-50 split between Bush and Kerry. Hell, it might even be 75 percent Kerry in here. This is an insanely conservative town, solidly Bush. Look at the debate, Kerry is destroying Bush, but you won't find people in Oxford listening to the debate, or if they do listen, they'll refuse to believe what they hear. I'm a registered Republican. I've been a conservative all my life. A year ago, I realized there was an election coming, and I didn't know a thing about it. I spent all of my nights in the kitchen. So I started reading everything, catching up on the last three years. What I found out sent me careening to the left."
