Bizarre crime from Charlotte police files (July 16)

Royalty and refunds

Prince Was Here: A woman called the cops after reporting her door had been vandalized, or labeled, depending on how you look at it. The woman said that someone had used purple fingernail polish to write "Purple Room" on the back of her bedroom door.

Monkeying Around: A person left their mark at the Aloft hotel at Epicentre by going on a vandalism spree through the entire building. The suspect wrote offensive things in red marker throughout the hotel; including in the stairwell, elevator and a bathroom. Not stopping there, the suspect left a more personal touch, smearing feces on the stairwell, windows, on the elevator buttons, hand rails, door handles and bathroom walls, resulting in $1,000 in damage. In an unrelated report, a maid at a different hotel reported that someone stole $650 worth of eight-ounce air fresheners from her cart while it sat outside of a room she was cleaning. The only suspects in need of a massive amount of air fresheners would be the cleaning staff at Aloft.

Overreacting: A neighborly dispute escalated when a man assaulted his neighbor because clippings from the neighbor's lawnmower blew over to his side of the property. The man threatened then punched him for messing up his yard. In an unrelated incident, a man pulled a gun on a woman during an argument over her wrongfully parking in a handicapped spot.

Refund Me: A couple teenagers called police after their attempts to sell drug paraphernalia went awry. An 18-year-old man and 16-year-old girl sold a man a piece of paraphernalia when he flipped out — as drug addicts often do — and said he wanted them to give him money. The suspect tried to forcefully take the girl's purse to retrieve the money he wanted, but the teens got away. In an unrelated incident, a man and woman met at a west Charlotte hotel. She was paid beforehand, but after the deed was done the man pulled a gun and demanded his $220 back. She gave it to him and he fled, but he was arrested soon thereafter in the parking lot.

Blotter items are chosen from the files of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
