Bizarre crimes from Charlotte police files (April 18)

Hot sale in south Charlotte Family Dollar parking lot

Pop-Up Shop: Police responded to a shoplifting call in south Charlotte last week after a couple of men allegedly stole cameras from a Family Dollar store. The men weren't hard to track down; according to police, they were attempting to sell the cameras in the parking lot of the same Family Dollar store.

Lucky Shot: Two officers were patrolling in northwest Charlotte last week when they heard a gunshot two blocks over. They sped to the scene and found a man bleeding from the leg. The victim said he had been robbed of $200, and apparently the man who did it wasn't in a hurry because the officers "found the suspect next to the victim." He was detained without any struggle.

Pissed On: A 28-year-old man filed a police report stating a man he knew had stolen his futon. Prior to contacting police, he had been trying to contact the suspect to convince him to return the furniture, yet the man only added salt to the wound. The suspect told him that his cats had urinated on the couch, meaning it was too damaged to give back. The victim did not believe in marking one's territory that way and wanted the couch cleaned and returned.

Dad of the Year: A 20-year-old woman called police, saying her baby's father had brutally beaten her in her east Charlotte home. The man allegedly shoved her onto the bed and then straddled her before choking her for four seconds. The two were in an argument over which of them was the better parent.

Flight Risk: A man and woman's plan to get over their fear of flying backfired on them last week when the woman found herself in the back of an ambulance. Police responded to a report of drug use in the bathroom of Charlotte Douglas International Airport and found the couple in a bad state; one of them had apparently overdosed on prescription medicine, but both had clearly taken too much. The woman was treated by medics and no legal action was taken.

Driving Lesson: A 46-year-old woman was leaving for work last week when she realized that one of her neighbors had a major problem with her driving skills. The woman told officers that someone had keyed the words "learn to park" into the driver's side of her Ford truck, and left scratches around the rest of the vehicle as well.

Pick Up, Aisle 9: A 26-year-old man returned to a local Harris Teeter last week after realizing that his $1,200 diamond earring had probably fallen out while he was shopping. The man was told that a customer found the earring and turned it into management, but a woman had already come by and claimed it, saying that she had been the one to drop it. The man said that it was his earring and he had told a female friend about losing it earlier in the day.

Blotter items are chosen from the files of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
