Bizarre crimes from Charlotte polices files (Nov. 22)

Diamonds are forever if you tie yours to a shoe

Diamonds Aren't Forever: A 33-year-old woman filed a police report after losing a precious piece of jewelry at work last week. The woman told officers she had a diamond ring on her finger while working at the Jewish Day Community Center on Providence Road. She was afraid of losing it during an activity so she tied it to her shoe, which she apparently thought was a much safer place. Well, the woman lost it. In the police report, she lists the ring's worth at $100,000.

Breakfast Brawls: Objects used as weapons last week include a coffee mug filled with hot tea and a package of uncooked bacon. Both were used as projectiles and became tools of assault after hitting targets squarely in their faces.

Setting an Example: Police responded to an assault call in east Charlotte last week, after two parents who were trying to do the right thing set a bad example. When police arrived, they found a 34-year-old woman with minor injuries to her face. The woman told officers that she had been punched by a neighbor. She claimed that she and the woman got into it after "trying to break up a confrontation between their children." The suspect punched the do-gooder mother in the mouth. Kids, let this be a lesson: Nice moms finish last.

The Good Son: Police were called to a home in Matthews last week after a man proved not to be of much help to his mother, who had been recovering from an injury. The 62-year-old woman was in a wheelchair after breaking her knee, but still tried to stop her son from taking take her car out for a spin. The woman knew he had been drinking and tried to get her keys back from him, but he pushed her over in her wheelchair. He then dragged the woman across the kitchen floor by her arms before leaving the scene in her car.

I Got Your 10 Percent: While taxi drivers in this city are assaulted by their riders far too often, one driver flipped the script on one of his customers last week. A 21-year-old man filed a police report claiming that he had been punched by his taxi driver the night before. The man told police that he paid the driver when they arrived at his destination, but when the driver realized no tip would be forthcoming, he exited the car and punched the victim in the face.

Ugly Christmas Sweater: An employee of Advanced Home Care filed a police report last week after someone broke into his car and stole his work equipment. The man told officers that someone shattered his window and took some work equipment, which together cost $900. The man made sure to point out in the report that the sweater he had wrapped around the equipment was left untouched. He did not make clear whether that makes him want to rethink his wardrobe.

Blotter items are chosen from the files of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
