As my girlfriends and I packed into an elevator headed to my going-away party, I thought it would be polite to extend an invitation to Cherie Berry, as she was in the elevator with us. Actually, she is in every elevator in Charlotte. She is perhaps the most famous person in Charlotte.
But who is the most powerful? Anthony Foxx? Michael Jordan?
Nope. It's the guy at the door of any given club on any given weekend night. The bouncer. He's the guy who looks like an offensive lineman and stands at the front door with a clipboard dictating the outcome of your evening. He will either hold the door open for you, or let it hit your ass on the way out.
I recently chatted with Thomas Muna, a bouncer at the EpiCentre, who said he's seen it all ... and has even been vomited on. Muna has been to Iraq twice. He has protected our country, so he's damn sure going to protect the bar. He says he's seen fewer fights. Why? Because of the tight security.
Meanwhile, a bouncer at the Music Factory reiterated that they don't profile people, except when it comes to the dress code — and they're just doing their job. And a hard job it is. For starters, they have to put up with me on a weekly basis ... but not for long.
I'm only leaving Charlotte for two months to go on a book tour, but my friends and I still saw it as a reason to have a party. It's not my tour (yet); I'm going with Tucker Max as he promotes his new book Assholes Finish First. I'm the opening act. OK, not really, but this will be practice for my own book tour, for the book I've been working on between columns.
I'll be back soon. You can't get rid of me, kinda like herpes but just not as bad. I'll actually be back, with Tucker Max, on Oct. 26 at Joseph-Beth Booksellers for the signing, and later that night at Whisky River for the official after party.
Brittney After Dark is going to bed for a while, but if you're interested, you can keep up with my adventures on the road with Tucker on my new website BrittneyCason.com.
