CD REVIEW: Download for Good

THE DEAL: Music compilation released as a benefit for the David Lynch Foundation featuring 33 artists from a variety of genres.

THE GOOD: The album starts with the Latin groove of Ozomatli, followed by an acoustic Iggy Pop performing "Milk Cow Blues." Jakob Dylan pairs up with Darryl Hannah for "Won't You Stay," Peter Gabriel offers "Curtains," and The Police's Andy Summers provides "Ave Maria" with operatic vocals from Geeta Novotny. From Tom Waits and Ben Folds to Alanis Morisette and Moby, from Neon Trees and Rodrigo y Gabriela to Julio Iglesias Jr., there's truly a mix of something for everyone here. There's also a handful of remixes included which give reason to check out songs you might already be familiar with.

THE BAD: Even the songs that aren't my favorites are still worth giving a listen just for the pure variety of the album. It bounces from rock to a ballad to something a bit techno-driven to folk. The live tracks sometimes throw off the vibe of the album.

THE VERDICT: There's a bunch of unreleased tracks on this new compilation, but that doesn't make it a throwaway. It's a great variety pack with a vast array of talent. As you might expect with an album coming from Lynch, it plays more like a movie soundtrack, but that's not a bad thing here.
