CD Review: Junior Astronomers's I Had Plans For Us

The Deal: Local quintet releases six-song debut, I Had Plans For Us, on the Kinnikinnik label.

The Good: It would be easy to label this album as some kind of garage rock with a modern rock flair and elements of punk tossed in, but I'm not sure that would fully describe it. There's a raw quality here, but I wouldn't want to hear these guys all polished up. It's a rough-around-the-edges aura that draws you in. Listen carefully to the instrumentation and you can hear the difference in guitar tones, thunderous drumming, emotional vocals all veiled under a thin layer of haze that makes you feel like you're listening in some place like The Milestone.

The Bad: Nothing to complain about.

The Verdict: I caught the second half of the band's set at the Visulite Theatre on April 11 and am impressed that the disc captures the band's live energy well. I expect to hear more from these guys, and see a lot more of them around Charlotte in the future.
