CIAA 2012: Comedy, spoken word, theater events

Comedy

Royal Comedy Tour at Bojangles' Coliseum. Now going into its third year, the Royal Comedy Tour — coming to the "Bo-Round" — must be doing something right. We think leading comedian Sommore might have a hand in this show's successful run. The tour also features acts by Bruce Bruce, Earthquake, Mark Curry and Tony Rock. March 3, 8 p.m. $47-$77. Flavor Flav at The Comedy Zone Charlotte. Flavor Flav, a founding member of the '80s political rap group Public Enemy, presents his newest round of collected comics. Spoken Word

SlamCharlotte CIAA Poetry Slam at McGlohon Theatre. Poetry slam hosted by Charlotte's own two-time national championship team of spoken word. Hosted by slammaster Bluz. Theater

Miles & Coltrane: Blue(.) at Duke Energy Theatre. It's the galvanizing energy of Miles Davis' ground breaking quintets in the 1950s that On Q Productions strives to capture in its Miles & Coltrane: Blue(.). An element of time when trumpet-blaring Davis and skillful saxophonist John Coltrane partnered to make a wondrous residual slide in soundscapes that would unleash their names to be forever known as jazz legends. For the production, On Q has rallied local poets, musicians, dancers and actors to articulate the noteworthy shifts in music history. $22. Race at Carolina Actors Studio Theatre. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet's Race might be based in a boring ol' courtroom, but the energy is running high. That's to only be expected when a white billionaire is accused of raping a black woman, two notable attorneys are assigned to the case and the media is rabidly reporting on the racially divided affair before a verdict has even been reached. $18-$28. Cuttin' Up at Actor's Theatre of Charlotte. Is it just me or is there always a good story to be told at a barbershop? The last time I was there, I heard chatter about a new stomach virus, mohawks and a recent mugging gone wrong. Not the most scandalous of talk, but it sure makes a haircut go quickly. Actor's Theatre of Charlotte's Cuttin' Up — a play by Charles Randolph-Wright that's based on Craig Marberry's bestselling book Cuttin' Up: Wit and Wisdom from Black Barber Shops — is buzzing with ear-catching tales proper enough to back my assessment that there's a lot more than snipping hair to these community congregations. $24-$29.
