J-RODDY WALSTON AND THE BUSINESS Led by piano-pounding vocalist/frontman Walston, the Baltimore band oft evokes an aural combination of Ben Folds and Marshall Crenshaw. Walston isn't too shabby on the guitar, either, and the tight rhythm section brings it all home with flair. With Lamb Handler. Snug Harbor (Shukla)

FRIDAY 6.29

THE BRILLIANT INVENTIONS Atlanta's acoustic-pop duo the Brilliant Inventions is one part music and one part stand-up comedy. The dual songwriters Eliot Bronson and Josh Lamkin both toured as solo acts before forming the band. It's an arrangement that works well and the perky pop and storied lyrics are pretty darn contagious. Gesundheit! The Evening Muse (Shukla)

BOWLING FOR SOUP Although they hark from small town Texas, Bowling for Soup play urbane pop rock that's bouncy and rocking. The recent song "High School Never Ends," reflects their sense of fun and frolic, but the quirky quartet doesn't slack off on the musical end. Amos' SouthEnd (Shukla)

SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS On its latest, Countrypolitan Favorites guitarist Rick Miller, bassist Mary Huff and drummer Dave Hartman chill out a bit with the hillbilly schtick in favor of laying waste (in a good way) to classics like Don Gibson's "Oh Lonesome Me," The Who's "Happy Jack," and about a dozen more flash-fried favorites. And while the shows' inevitable antics are a bit more sterile now than in the past (throw fried chicken and 'nanner pudding at an audience on a regular basis and you tend to get a reputation for it), the music certainly isn't -- it's a solid shot of corn(y) liquor that won't fail to loosen your inhibitions. SATURDAY 6.30

LABIA MINOR This N.C.-based duo never strays far from the garage and stirs a blend of rock and punk with a contemporary twist on old-school acid rock. They create quite a ruckus for a duo. Imagine dropping a stack of pots and pans on a concrete floor, but with proper tuning. Also on the bill: The 63 Crayons and LA Tool & Die. Milestone (Shukla)

STREET DOGS Boston's streetwise punk quintet the Street Dogs feature ex-Dropkick Murphys' lead singer Mike McColgan. After a stint as a fireman in Beantown, McColgan assembled the Street Dogs' power tools punk rock that's spiked with Celtic flourishes. The result is melodic punk on the hardcore tip. The Tossers, Krum Bums and 25 Minutes to Go are also on the bill this evening. Tremont Music Hall (Shukla)

FETCHIN' BONES "DEAD BAND ROCKIN'" REUNION SHOW Charlotteans Hope Nicholls, Aaron Pitkin and Danna Pentes (along with a mess o' drummers and guitarists) used to have this band back in the late 1980s called Fetchin' Bones. In a little over six years (if memory serves) they released four records and played with the likes of The Replacements, The B-52s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and R.E.M. And, right when they seemed on the cusp of popular success ... it kinda just didn't happen. Few bands have meant more to Charlotte music, however, or left such a valuable template (creatively, at the least) for their fellow musician friends to follow. Their female-led punk/funk/country metal was always a little ahead of its time, but here's betting it's held up just fine over the last 15+ years. Amos' SouthEnd (Davis)

THROUGH THE SPARKS This Birmingham, Ala., quintet crafts lustrous indie pop with traces of psychedelia, exotic accents, and blue-eyed soul peppered in to raise it above the fray. Sonic cousins to bands like the Court & Spark, the band's extra dimensions -- usually courtesy their keyboard and synth layers -- add rich textures matching the fecund imagery of Jody Nelson's narratives. Their full-length debut, Lazarus Beach, is one of those records whose charms multiply with repeat listens. The Evening Muse (Schacht)

SUNDAY 7.1

CAMPBELL The Charlotte quartet is having a CD release party for River In My Home before heading out on the road around the Southeast. Their smooth, mellow, indie stylings are sometimes piano-driven, sometimes more acoustic, while there are also hints of a Celtic influence. While the music may have subtle diversity, it's Matt Padgett's vocals and falsetto that keep it tied together. With Rookie of the Year and Lorien. Tremont Music Hall (Hahne)

MONDAY 7.2

ROMANTICA Irishman Ben Kyle's sophomore record is titled America, which is fitting, and not just because he now calls Minneapolis home. It's filled with gently elegant takes on American country rock in the mold of, say, Pete Bruntnell or Gram Parsons-acolyte Neal Casal. The songwriting is much-improved over Romantica's debut, but what really elevates the music is the rich twang provided by the planet's greatest pedal steel player, Eric Heywood, and the elegiac fiddle of Jessy Greene (Wilco, Jayhawks).
