Comic review: 50 Girls 50

The Deal: Famed artist Frank Cho teams with writer Doug Murray to co-script this brand-new sci-fi property, which is apparently about a crew of 50 female astronauts who trek into space on a mission to save humanity.

The Good: If you're hoping to see Cho draw some interior pages, you've come to the wrong place. (He does draw a few covers.) But even though he's not drawing panel-to-panel work for this limited series, the art in 50 Girls 50 (by Axel Medellin) is still stunning. Medellin employs some of Cho's visual techniques — so his drawings are clean and he pumps out a ton of cheesecake shot — but manages to establish his own style. The story is slightly confusing, but fun.

The Bad: OK, cheesecake is fun, but there's way too much cheesecake in these pages. Honestly, it seems like the whole point of the comic is to get the female heroes butt-ass naked as soon as possible. Really. I'm not kidding. For example, and I don't mean to spoil anything, but two of the lady astronauts land on a planet that happens to have a corrosive atmosphere — which eats away their spacesuits. By the end of the book, they're wearing animal-hide bikinis ... and those just happen to get ripped off by high winds. Really, y'all? It seems like a group of tween boys slapped this whole premise together. A little cheeky titillation is fine, but we've officially gone over the deep end here.

The Verdict: This is a fun comic with great art, but it's a little too juvenile for my tastes. But if you're into that kind of thing, enjoy.
