The Deal: It's the latest installment in the ongoing adventures of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. This edition, the first part of three self-contained issues, shows us a version of The League in 1910 (hence the title) and sends the team in search of some occultists who may be hatching an evil plot.
The Good: Like any incarnation of The League, Century is chockfull of characters from literature and pop culture. I must admit that whenever I read a comic starring The League, I feel like I'm missing something because I'm not familiar with all the characters. But it's a fun sort of scavenger hunt trying to identify who is really who. Another enjoyable aspect of Century is that, bucking conventions often found in serialized fiction, the team comes off as pretty incompetent when it comes to solving the comic's main mystery. In these types of works, the super sleuths always seem to get their man or woman. But in this comic, the crew walks away empty-handed, and that's refreshing.
The Bad: Now, while it's refreshing that The League doesn't crack the comic's big case, it is easy to come away from Century feeling that nothing much happened. Clearly, this issue introduces elements that will likely be revisited in later editions, but it could be argued that it's done at the expense of the current issue.
The Verdict: Buy it.
