Crime by the numbers

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department just released the latest crime statistics through the end of June.* To the relief of Charlotte citizens everywhere (and the CMPD especially), the numbers are dropping ... but not all of them.

• Property crime is up 2.7 percent. The department attributes this to the rising rate of theft from cars, which has risen 17.9 percent. Bicycle theft is up 29.7 percent.

• Robbery and burglary are down 6.4 percent and 6.8 percent respectively but larceny has risen 13.5 percent.

• Homicide increased 11.8 percent, with 34 criminal homicides occurring last year-to-date and 38 so far this year.

• The overall total of violent crime is down 7.8 percent.

• Rape instances have dropped 23.6 percent.

• Vehicle theft declined 20.3 percent.

According to figures totaled for the year-to-date, some form of larceny (including robbery, burglary and vehicle theft) makes up roughly 92 percent of all tabulated crime. The remainder is comprised of aggravated assault (6.7 percent), arson (0.7 percent), rape (0.5 percent) and homicide (0.1 percent).

*Offenses are totaled for the first six months of the year and compared to the same period last year.
