@Dawn elevates Steele Creek's breakfast game

Building a better breakfast

As the old adage goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And while boring old bacon and eggs will get you through your day, I suggest you elevate your breakfast game with a visit to @Dawn, the newly opened breakfast and coffee concept in Steele Creek.

Tucked into Ayrsley (literally, it's wedged between Wild Wing Café and an Allen Tate Realtor's office), @Dawn is the perfect place to start your day. Walking in feels like you've been welcomed into Chef Gregory Collier and his wife Subrina's home. The intricate details and special touches throughout the space, from the menu, to the friendly staff and unique décor, create a cozy, comfortable, welcoming space.

Give yourself the feeling you're eating breakfast in bed by taking a seat at one of the tables along the left wall dotted with bed frame art, or pull up a barstool for the perfect view into the open kitchen and watch the organized chaos of cooking while you sip your cup of joe.

Speaking of coffee, @Dawn has brought Steele Creek's coffee game to a new level. The opening of @Dawn fulfills at least this resident's dreams of a quality coffee shop in the neighborhood. Long gone are the days of waiting in a Starbucks drive-thru line that snakes through a shopping center parking lot when I'm too lazy to brew something at home. Instead, you'll find me sipping on one of @Dawn's lattes or macchiatos. The focus on local carries through into their coffee program, which is fueled by local roaster Magnolia Coffee.

Speaking of local, @Dawn is enhancing the most important meal of the day with local partnerships with North and South Carolina farmers and purveyors. The chef driven restaurant is much more than your standard bacon and scrambled eggs. You'll notice you're "building a better breakfast" with creative approaches to traditional breakfast fare, high quality, local and sustainable ingredients and rotating seasonally inspired specials.

The menu is divided into "handhelds," @Dawn's spin on breakfast sandwiches and burritos; and "mouthfuls," a more well-rounded breakfast approach. Items range from a traditional egg sandwich, the BEG with bacon, egg and gouda on a biscuit — packed full of flavor and anything but traditional — to a vegan grain bowl served with sweet chile sauce.

If you're looking for something a little more traditional (but still elevated and delicious) breakfast favorites like pancakes, toast and eggs benedict all make appearances on the menu.

However, I highly encourage you to break out of your breakfast comfort zone and try one of Chef Collier's more creative concoctions. Both the 5k and Camelback are items that shouldn't be missed. Smothered in asiago cheese sauce and stuffed with turkey bacon, caramelized onions, greens, and egg whites, the 5k is a breakfast burrito that's essentially gift from the heavens (really, anything with @Dawn's asiago cheese sauce on it is a gift from the heavens). The Camelback is a breakfast burrito that your hands can't handle (so make sure you have a fork and a napkin!), featuring scrambled eggs, smoked onions, Tennessee fries, Pollo Rojo and roasted peppers. Speaking of Tennessee fries, make sure you add them as a side to any order; they're tiny, seasoned wedges of deliciousness.
