For My Friends

CD Review: Blind Melon

The Deal: Underappreciated band from the '90s gets new singer, releases first studio album in 13 years.

The Good: Fans were crushed when singer Shannon Hoon was found dead of a drug overdose and overjoyed when they found out the band was reuniting. New singer Travis Warren does a good job filling Hoon's shoes as For My Friends fits in nicely with the rest of the band's catalog. The first three tracks could fit on any other Melon album, but the band shows some of its diversity and growth as well. The organ on "Sometimes" separates it from the usual Melon sound. The band is as musically solid as ever, perhaps showing a little more maturity and depth after 13 years apart.

The Bad: When you see the band live, you see Warren offering up a heart-filled tribute to Hoon in every moment of his performance. At times, on the new album, Warren sounds a little too much like Hoon and it gets almost haunting. You just have to wonder if he sounds a little too much like Hoon. As far as the songs themselves, there isn't a weak link in the 13-track bunch.

The Verdict: A breath of new life into a band whose momentum was cut too short. Fans will be satisfied.

Adrenaline; Release date: April 22, 2008
