'99 Things,' 'Retire Columbus Day'

Proud to be a Charlottean

Wow, maybe you guys should change your name to Creative Loathing. Whoever wrote the article, "99 Things to do to Call Yourself a True Charlottean" (Oct. 11) must really hate Charlotte. I think you should refer to your own No. 98: "Complain that Charlotte is lame and do nothing to make our city better," because this article certainly did plenty of that.

I was very disappointed in this paper after this article. Hey why don't you find something more constructive then bashing everything in Charlotte and actually print an article that tells people in the city ... hmmmm I don't know ... things that are actually fun and exciting to do in Charlotte without a snide comment about it afterwards?

Oh and as for No. 36, well here is another drinking game for ya ... drink every time Creative Loafing made a snide or racist comment ("Go blackface and downtown or wear a turban and photograph the skyscrapers" ... are you kidding me? Come on guys) or anytime they totally bash Charlotte in this article. That will get you pretty f***ed up real quick.

I moved back to North Carolina from the Northeast about a year and a half ago and chose Charlotte because it has a lot going for it and is a fun, vibrant city that is growing and eclectic.

When I lived in North Carolina all I heard about Charlotte was how conservative a city it was, how bad it was for singles, how devode of culture it was, how Nascar is the only thing the city has to offer, etc., etc. When I got offered a job here from Philadelphia and came down to visit, I thought I would hate the city for those reasons. Well, I found the complete opposite and immediately fell in love with the city.

This article does not represent the city that I moved to, and I feel that it really portrayed it in a bad light. Why don't you try to scratch the surface and find out what really makes Charlotte a great city where people want to be, and where people keep moving to in droves. I travel all over the country with work and I find few places that are as nice of a place to live as Charlotte (the people, the weather, the proximity to the mountains and coast, the beautiful lakes, the great restaurants, the great neighborhoods, the beautiful trees, the great shopping, and the interesting mix of Southern culture with people from all over the country and world).

I love Charlotte -- don't bash my city. If you don't like it here and this is all you think Charlotte has to offer then you need to move to Chapel Hill or Atlanta where I hear they have great bands that stop through regularly. Let me know how you like it when you get there (I've been to both and wasn't impressed with either).

True, but of limited relevance: Much of what you've said is factually true ("Retire Columbus Day," Oct. 11). It just is not relevant to a discussion of U.S. culture and history. Who first set foot here is of no consequence. The success of our uniquely American culture and civilization has nothing to do with the dirt under our feet, and everything to do with the culture and society that began with the European colonization of this continent. (And by the way, calling those earlier inhabitants "native Americans" is as factually wrong as calling them "Indians". They did not spring to life from some primoridal ooze on the banks of the Mississippi. They came here from elsewhere and are no more "native" than any of the rest of us.)

Free and Public Education?: With students such as those mentioned above ("Jorge's Reign of Terror," Oct. 4), and other NOT mentioned but out there is other schools, it amazes me that, in this society so ready to sue, parents have not sued the CMS school system for allowing such disruptions on a continuous basis. If these actions and their repercussions are not denying the OTHER students the right to an education, I do not know what is!!
