Penguin sets 10th Pig Pickin'

If you're looking for a good time and a great outdoor party, but low on cash this 4th of July, come check out the ever-growing 10th Annual Penguin Pig Pickin' at the Penguin Drive-in at Plaza Midwood.

This year's entertainment includes Appalucia, Parodi Kings, Truckstop Preachers, Andy the Doorbum and The Flat Tires. Entrance is free and there will be delicious food and cold drinks sold throughout the event.

The event, sponsored by Budweiser this year, began 10 years ago as an actual pig pickin' with food cooked out in the parking lot along with all the other action. The cooking eventually moved inside but the lively crowd and entertainment stayed outside to create a unique atmosphere in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood.

Part-owner Andy Cauble enjoys putting on the mini-festival and feels it's a way to repay the Penguins' loyal patrons. "It's a free local gathering, and we like to celebrate the neighborhood," said Cauble. "We just work [the free show] in, and want to give something back to the community."

The Penguin has grown in popularity since it was featured a few years back on Food Network's program Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Twenty-five hundred wristbands were handed out last year, and even more of a turnout is expected this go-around as the music bill grows larger.

In the words of Cauble, "Everybody loves some Penguin."
