Salute the new and reopened in the local food industry

Plus, celebrate Earth Day the organic way

• The National Cooperative Grocers Association suggests the following ways to celebrate Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22: Eat only locally grown and organic foods; support a sustainable deli or restaurant; join a Community Supported Agriculture; attend or host an Earth Dinner; plant a produce garden.

• The Waxhaw Farmers' Market opens Saturday, April 26 with new hours: Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The market offers locally grown produce, goat cheese, eggs, baked goods and dog treats. New vendors this year include Salsaleightos gourmet salsas, Julie Angermeier Produce (also soaps and preserves), Carolyn Porter (produce, plants and relish) and Catherine and Michael Grippa's homemade fudge.

• Reopened and transformed is Salute, now Salute Wine Bar and Wine Store (613 Providence Road, 704-343-9095). Hours are Monday through Thursday 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m.; weekends until 10 p.m. On the menu are small plates, paninis, a selection of beer and a diverse international wine list. Downstairs is a private function room for 25. Under construction is their "new-concept" Web site: mywinningwines.com.

Harper's Restaurant in SouthPark (6530 Fairview Road, across from SouthPark Mall, 704-366-6612) has expanded its Sunday brunch menu. Now opening at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays, the new menu features items like wood-fired sirloin steak and eggs, a spicy cajun omelette with apple-smoked bacon, Roma tomatoes, roasted red peppers and smoked cheddar cheese, and a malted waffle with whipped cream and homemade peach topping.
