Scoring at the right sports bar
Football season has officially kicked off ... with a Panthers loss to the Ravens and Michael Oher, the real life player portrayed in the movie The Blind Side. But that doesn't count, and football season has kicked off nonetheless. And in Charlotte when it's game on, that means party on, Wayne ... party on, Garth.
Bank of America Stadium aside, where is one to watch the games in Charlotte now that Cans has closed? It's anyone's ball now ... but one bar has the balls to step up and claim that championship title of premiere sports bar — and it hasn't even opened yet.
Taco Mac (which, by the way, serves Buffalo wings as opposed to tacos or macaroni) is opening in SouthPark just in time for the games that do count. Stats = 140 different beers, 70 HD-TVs, and one of the largest HD televisions in the country. Score.
Some other bars that have their game faces on include IceHouse in South End (which took the space of Southend Brewery, minus the actual brewery), Black Bear Saloon in N.C. Music Factory, Town Tavern, and Stadium Sports Tavern off Ardrey Kell Road.
And for the transplants, there's a bar for you to go support your favorite team as well. Dixie's is the place Steelers fans can go wave their terrible towels; Buffalo Bills fans herd to Tavern on the Tracks; and Beantown in Matthews caters to the New England fans. Also on the roster of sports bars is Blackfinn in the EpiCentre, Angry Ale's, Jocks and Jills, Picasso's, Situations, Sidelines, Hickory Tavern, Steamers Sports Pub, Stool Pigeons, Fox and the Hound ... and pretty much any bar that specializes in wings and has televisions.
Speaking of sports, I feel bad for Cleveland ... they lost Lebron and gained Jake Delhomme. Hopefully he's gotten LASIK surgery since last season to help his apparent color blindness from throwing balls directly to receivers in the wrong jerseys.
If the Panthers suck again this year, at least you can always check out the roster of people at the sports bars around town — and perhaps even score.
