The Sea Hawk

When: Sat., July 28, 2 p.m. 2012
Price: Free admission
The 1935 nautical adventure Captain Blood was the movie that made Errol Flynn a star overnight, and this oceanic epic from 1940 is every bit as exciting. Flynn is in fine form as Geoffrey Thorpe, a British commander and leader of the patriotic "Sea Hawks," who tries to convince Queen Elizabeth (Flora Robson) that Spain has grand ambitions to conquer the globe, including England. As Thorpe's love interest, Brenda Marshall pales in comparison to Flynn’s frequent leading lady Olivia de Havilland (who, indeed, was offered the role, but turned it down). But Robson is magnificent as the queen, and the strong supporting cast includes such reliables as Claude Rains and Alan Hale. This will be shown as part of the Main Library series Ships Ahoy!!: 8 Classic Seafaring Films.
