Recently, the esteemed lefties from the local MoveOn chapter tried to visit US Rep. Sue Myrick's office, hoping to accomplish what had been a fairly easy task at other politicians' offices: hand a staffer some petitions protesting something-or-other. This time, the petitions were urging Myrick, a Republican, to return money received from indicted US Rep. Tom DeLay.
Alas, according to MoveOn participants, security turned them away at the door to the building housing Myrick's office. They had crossed private property, security told them, and could be arrested for trespassing. So Creative Loafing thought, just how accessible is Myrick's local command center?
I made sure to dress appropriately conservative for my visit -- no hippie-dippy hemp outfits for me (in truth, most MoveOn members' attire is pretty mainstream, but we're going on caricature here). Today, there's no protest planned. It's just me, a notebook and a tiny point-and-shoot digital camera.
I make it inside the unremarkable south Charlotte office building, up the elevator and to her office door just fine. Opening the door, a woman at the front desk greets me. Her business card indicates she is a passport specialist, and she could not be more courteous. "You'll have to speak with the chief of staff about that," she says politely when I tell her the reason for my visit. We exchange business cards, she tells me she'll give my message to chief of staff Hal Weatherman, and I go on my way. I call him again an hour after returning to Creative Loafing's office. Ho-hum.
I'm still waiting for my phone call. But at least I made it inside.
