Where to find it: Holiday Desserts

During the holidays, we often seek those desserts remembered from a grandmother's table. Some of these dishes cannot be found in local bakeries. I have had many requests, for example, for mandelbrot, an almond (mandel) bread (brot) that's a traditional Jewish sweet similar to an Italian biscotti. That's not available locally; however, some ethnic desserts are made here.

The Waldhorn will have a limited supply of Christmas stollen ($10.95) after Thanksgiving. (Stollen may be frozen.) Also available are Apfelstrudel, apple strudel (8 to 10 slices), for $25; and a Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, or German black forest cake — the kind with chocolate cake, cherry filling, and homemade whipped cream — is available in a 10-inch cake (16 slices) for $30, or a half sheet cake (40 to 50 pieces) for $40. These can be ordered. (Waldhorn Restaurant, 12101 Lancaster Highway, Pineville, 704-540-7047.)

For several years, I've ordered the Bouche du Noel from Amelie's. The Fresh Market sells this cake for less, but it's not as good. Prices at Amelie's will be available after Thanksgiving; last year's price was $45. Orders require 48 hours. (Amelie's French Bakery, 2424 N. Davidson St., 704-376-1781.)

While finding a pre-packaged panettone is relative easy in Charlotte, other Italian treats — especially house-made treats — are not. Nona's, though, will offer a special limited supply of a sweet Christmas wreath — dough bow ties, glazed with syrup then packaged in a tin. This wreath, similar to a struffol, will be available in early December. (Nona's Sweets Bakery Café, 9601 N. Tryon St., 704-717-6144.)
