Where to fine Nepalese food

Restaurateur Tulsi Bhandari is no stranger to Charlotteans' tastes. He has been in the Indian restaurant and grocery business for more than a decade. In 2004, Bhandari opened the 60-seat Situl Indian Restaurant, 540 Brandywine Road, behind Park Road Shopping Center (704-523-0037). While Situl offers a wide range of Indian dishes on their menu, Bhandari has maintained a few dishes from his native Nepal, a cuisine known to be healthy.

"The Tibet Nepali dishes are like Chinese and Thai food mixed with Indian," he explains. The Nepalese items included on Situl's menu include dal bhat, lentils (traditionally black or yellow) and long grain rice; a crescent shaped momo wrap, a Nepalese pot sticker made with wheat flour wrappers filled with sautéed leeks, garlic, cilantro, and either chicken or vegetables; and chow mein. Tibetans who settled in Nepal brought chow mein with them and today this is one of the most popular fast foods in Nepal.

If there are other Nepalese dishes you seek, such as thupka, a winter chicken noodle soup with chilies, or alu tama, a dish with potatoes, bamboo shoots, black-eyed peas, garlic, spices, and yogurt, call ahead.
