Jonathan Byrd & The Pickup Cowboys

Thu., July 10

JONATHAN BYRD & THE PICKUP COWBOYS

Byrd is a deep-rooted man. He is a seventh-generation Carolinian with a natural understanding and love of folk, country music and songs and tales of the South. It’ll be an evening of stripped-down music that tips hats to tradition above all. Byrd meshes the rural sensibilities and lives of common folks into mighty fine songwriting with fluid picking and crooning. (Samir Shukla)

Thu., July 10

KOOL KEITH

A profane, prolific and legendary eccentric, Kool Keith put underground rap on the map in the late ’90s with his bizarre-yet-addictive collision of free-associative rhymes, psycho-sexual obsessions and series of schizoid personas — demented gynecologist Dr. Octagon, homicidal hip-hop overlord Dr. Dooom and smarmy rock star Black Elvis. His latest disc, Demolition Crash, suggests William Burroughs’ Naked Lunch set to a beat — inspired, vulgar and endearingly warped. (Michael Walsh)

Back Alley Film Series: Borgman

Thu., July 10, 7:30 p.m.

A sensation on the international film festival circuit — Borgman has competed at approximately 20 such events, including Cannes and the Toronto International Film Fest — this Dutch import centers on a vagrant (Jan Bijvoet) who latches onto a well-to-do family and commences to influence its members in dark and disturbing ways. The film is being presented locally as part of the Back Alley Film Series. For more information, visit www.backalleyfilmseries.com. $5-$10

There’s a great way to help build houses for Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte without even lifting a hammer. You can do it with books. We accept gently used books of all genres, sell them through our ReStore operation, and use the proceeds to help build more Habitat houses. We'll be hosting a book drive at the River Jam concert at the US National Whitewater Center. So dust off your shelves, and bring us some books, then stick around for great music in a beautiful setting! Free admission. Parking is $5
