The Matthews Heritage Museum and the Western North Carolina Region of the American Red Cross are joining together to put on the exhibit “A Century of Helping Hands"in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the American Red Cross in Mecklenburg County. The exhibit opens February 4 and will run to June 24, 2017. Many Red Cross chapters were founded in the US in 1917 as part of the effort to serve soldiers in World War I. This original exhibit features archaeological and historical collections on loan from the Schiele Museum of Natural History, the Inn of the Patriots, and several private collectors. The display includes stone and bone tools, ceramics, basketry, weaponry, and other artifacts that provide insight into how Native Americans utilized natural resources to meet their needs for millennia prior to European contact, and how the clash of the Old World with the New forever changed local Native American cultures. ADMISSION IS FREE! FREE

Lark & Key Gallery and Boutique presents ‘Garden Party’, on view April 7th through May 27th. “If birds could build nests, then they could make hats.” This whimsical notion was the beginning of the joyful bird and animal portraits that artist Vicki Sawyer is celebrated for. The ‘Garden Party’ exhibition features Vicki’s original artwork along with ceramics by Teresa Pietsch and jewelry from Anna Johnson. BOOM festival is an artist-led showcase of contemporary and experimental art: three days of dance, theater, visual art and family activities.
