Dave Wyndorf’s esoteric lyrics bounce around in the stoner metal and space-psych rock of Monster Magnet with his always-pissed dry howl. Wyndorf remains the only original member, although that hasn’t affected the band’s sound at all, and is currently on the road with a new crew for the band’s first North American tour in 10 years. The new album, Last Patrol, is a blazer, taut and raw, with Wyndorf’s snarl and the blast of dual guitars ably unsettling the room with its signature hard rock. Monster Magnet has been rocking its way, the retro aura and trends-be-damned attitude remaining intact, for nearly a quarter century while Wyndorf shows no signs of slacking. (Samir Shukla)
SU CASA’S 3RD ANNUAL WONDERLAND
What do Smokey Robinson’s “Tears of a Clown,” Michael Jackson’s “I Can’t Help It” and Rufus’ “Tell Me Something Good” have in common? They were all written by Stevie Wonder. Sure, he’s got plenty of his own hits, but do you realize how deep the R&B legend’s catalog is? Get an idea at this third annual event paying tribute to Steve Wonder. Su Casa’s Wonderland brings in the familiar with the obscure, and also introduces you to Wonder-filled collaborations and remixes you probably didn’t know existed. As an added bonus, Ida Divine and The Garvey Collective will perform some of Wonder’s and their own songs. (Jeff Hahne)
