Be creative with characters, pumpkin heads, leaves, scarecrows, and the list goes on! Instructor: Mr. Tom was a student of Johnny Hart, creator of the "B.C." and "Wizard of ID" comic strips, and he produced his own comic strip. Haines was the cartoonist for the 4th Infantry Division during his tour of duty in Vietnam in 1969. Pre-registration required. Cost: $35. All supplies included.

The third Friday of each month is Girls’ Night Out at Charlotte Fine Art Gallery! Oct. 17: Create a painting on canvas using oil and cold wax. Use your own design or follow along with the instructor to make a fruit piece for your kitchen or dining room, or to offer as a gift handcrafted by you! Time: 7 p.m.-8:30(ish). All supplies included. Refreshments served. Pre-registration required for GNO. We accept Visa or MC over the phone; or stop by during gallery hours with payment. Gallery is open Tues. 10am-4pm, Wed. and Thurs. 10am-9pm, Fri. 10 am-6pm, and Sat. 10am-2pm. $35.

Ages: 18 and over. Description: Learn in this two-Saturday workshop how to create impressionistic-style landscapes using acrylic paint with dry brush technique. Complete one painting each Saturday in 5 hours. Instruction will be step-by-step demonstrations plus individual guidance. The class will cover sketching, painting with a light wash, and applying thicker layers of color. Instruction on composition, perspective, color mixing and balance will also be covered. Instructor: Raed Al-Rawi. Pre-registration required. Early Bird: $180. (Early Bird registration ends September 5, 2014.) After September 5: $200.

Best known for their work with Alison Krauss and Union Station, Block and Hull will share their bluegrass, gospel, and alternative country music and inspiration. Ron Block is an American bluegrass and alternative country musician, mainly playing banjo and guitar, singing, and writing gospel music. For the past twenty years, he has been the spiritual touchstone of Alison Krauss and Union Station. Sierra Hull is a bluegrass virtuosic mandolinist, guitarist, singer, and songwriter. She began playing the mandolin at the age of eight. Her debut album, Secrets, was co-produced by Alison Krauss and Ron Block. $10

A short history of both Chinese and Japanese brush painting techniques, introduction to the materials, and fundamental and modern methods. Participants can be new to this medium. First day will begin with an introduction to the "four treasures," which are ink, paper, brush and ink stone. Basic brush strokes will be presented through the "four gentlemen" - bamboo, orchid, plum, and chrysanthemum. The second day, create one or two paintings using the technique and medium. Jazz saxophonist Jimmy Greene shares the heartbreak of losing his daughter in the Sandy Hook school shooting, and the healing that music can bring. Jimmy Greene is a saxophonist, composer, and educator. His jazz quartet has performed in festivals and jazz venues worldwide, and he has appeared on 70 recordings. In 2012 Greene lost his daughter, Ana Grace, in the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. Greene is preparing a new album called Beautiful Life to honor his daughter, with proceeds going to the Ana Grace Project aimed at preventing violence, and The Artists Collective, which exposes children to the arts. THE NET: A NEW WORSHIP EXPERIENCE AT PROVIDENCE UMC BEGINS SEPTEMBER 21 Providence United Methodist Church, 2810 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC will launch a new worship experience, The Net, Sunday, September 21, at 11:00 a.m. in Charter Hall. Each Sunday, the service will be led by Casey Crimmins, Providence UMC’s Director of Evangelism & Discipleship, and will feature music, worship, and preaching in a casual, family-friendly setting. Childcare is available. Parking is available on the Providence UMC campus, with overflow parking available in the lot behind Eddie’s Place and Leroy Fox Restaurants near the corner of Providence & Sharon-Amity.
