Exhibition: The World is a Mirror of My Freedom

Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Continues through March 25
phone 704-332-5535
abellmas@mccollcenter.org

The World is a Mirror of My Freedom was organized in response to the increasingly visible, lawful violence against Black bodies in the United States. Bringing together works from five of McColl Center’s current and alumni artists-in-residence, the exhibition explores themes of Black masculinity, social movement and mobility, revolution, and resistance. The exhibition drifts across time, from the 1700s to the future, inviting reflection on how the past has conditioned the present. The World is a Mirror of My Freedom features works by Marcus Kiser + Jason Woodberry, Shaun Leonardo, Dread Scott, and Charles Williams. FREE

Alash

Wed., Feb. 22, 8 p.m.

Throat singing, a technique where two or more notes are sung simultaneously, can create sounds ranging from guttural didgeridoo-like rumblings to unearthly shrieks. Alash, a trio from Tuva in southern Siberia, are musical ambassadors for the centuries-old form, touring extensively in America and collaborating with artists like Bela Feck. Alash tweak traditions by blending western instruments, harmonies and song structures into their hive of swarming voices. But their remarkable mouth music retains its alien beauty and mystery. $15

Wed., Feb. 22, 7-9 p.m.
phone 704-996-7724
info@warehousepac.com

Rock promoter Robert Stigwood produced this musical pastiche of Beatles songs, based on their seminal rock album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Peter Frampton (as Billy Shears) and The Bee Gees (Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, and Maurice Gibb as Mark, Dave, and Bob Henderson) make up the Fab Four of Sgt. Pepper's Band. Twenty-nine Beatles songs are woven together -- sung by as disparate a collection of personalities as George Burns, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Connie Stevens, David Bowie, and Steve Martin, who perform hallucinatory versions of Beatles hits. $10 general admission $5.00 students
