Satish Cherian felt like Uptown was screaming for retail. To answer that cry, he recently opened O1NE (pronounced ONE), a skate-themed clothing boutique, on the corner of Trade and Mint streets.
"Truthfully, if I wasn't going to do the store in Uptown Charlotte, I wasn't going to do the store in Charlotte," says Cherian, originally from New Jersey. "I just feel like there's so much potential here, and there's no real retail. I feel like I'm bringing that whole boutique style here, with labels that are up and coming, that you don't see everywhere else. I've got some of the hottest brands, from New York, L.A., Sweden, Japan."
When you walk into the store, the first thing you'll notice is dozens of skateboards hung up on the wall. Cherian says that he's a skateboarder and just wants to add to the huge skate scene Charlotte already has here. "Basically bring that whole up north, east coast culture down here," he says.
Men's and women's shirts and folded neatly on shelves, and hats are tucked just as neatly onto individual box-like shelves for display. "I wanted the store to have a real high-end look to it," Cherian says. "I'm not only appealing to the skateboarder or the snowboarder, but I'm appealing to the banker or the consultant, where they might not be into [the skate scene] or know about it, but they'll still come in here and respect the look of the store."
"Times have changed, in fashion and everything," he says. "You want to go out and look good and look right. You can't go to the mall anymore. You want sneakers or boots or something like that, you've got to go elsewhere. You don't want to look like everyone else."
O1NE's grand opening will go down this Saturday. Cherian says you can stop through anytime between 9 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m.
