Gift Guide: For the lover of comics

Posted by Kimberly Lawson on Thu, Dec 10, 2009 at 12:00 PM

So, I'm a bit freaked out. Christmas is only 14 days away, and I have YET to begin my holiday shopping. I'm sure you're not in the same boat as I am, you non-procrastinator, you.

Well, just in case you do need some help, I'm compiling a gift guide to make things a little easier on ya. Each day from now until Dec. 23 (because honestly, I'm just not going to be worrying about your gift-shopping on Christmas eve when I'm sure I'll be wrapping my own up then), check back to Klepto to see gift recommendations for that special someone in your life, whether they're music geeks, film fan boys or arts lovers. I'm sure you'll find something worthy to be wrapped.

Today, our resident comic book geek, CL Editor Carlton Hargro, takes a small break from blogging over at Comic Proportions to list for you, dear reader, gift ideas for the comic book geek in your life. You can buy most of these items at your local comic book shop; to find a store near you, visit: www.comicshoplocator.com. Anyway, here’s the list:

• The Starman Omnibus Vol. 4 hardcover: When writer James Robinson penned the monthly adventures of Starman, I was a regular reader. And this giant-sized collection of the comic — done in a deluxe format — is probably the best-looking way to take a walk down memory lane.

• Spawn: Endgame, Vol. 2 trade paperback: This collection reprints Todd McFarlane’s relaunch of the Spawn franchise, with pencilled art by Whilce Portacio and inks by McFarlane himself. I skipped the monthly issues when they came out, but I think this story will be a great read as one fat, juicy tale.

• Newwave! The Underground Mini Comix of the 1980’s: I missed out on many of these comics when they were originally published, but this collection — featuring work by R. Crumb and Art Spiegelman, among others — gives me a chance to see some comic greats early in their careers.

• The Original Johnson Vol. 1: I’m not usually a fan of comic book biographies, but I’ve always been fascinated by the life of Jack Johnson, so I gotta read this.

• The Goon Gelaskin: I love The Goon … and as a result, I’m ecstatic that the zombie-fighting character created by Eric Powell can now adorn my iPhone in the form of a handy-dandy gelaskin cover.
