Posted By on Thu, Apr 28, 2011 at 4:13 PM

If you're Uptown on Saturday, April 30, and see couples running for their lives, don't get scared. They're just competing to win a $15,000 Ritani diamond ring.

Fink’s Jewelers (which has locations in both Southpark and Northlake) has partnered with SCVNGR Inc to turn our city into a real-world game board with the Fink’s Diamond Dash. How does it work? Well, first, you need to have a honey to do the challenges with you. Then? Well, the comic strip says it all:

For a $15,000 diamond ring, I'd be more than willing to run around Uptown with my man, looking like a crazy, wouldn't you?

O1NE hosts spring looks show at Butter

Posted By on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 11:59 AM

Back in 2009, O1NE, a sneaker, men's and women's clothing boutique inspired by the skateboard culture, art and fashion, opened in Uptown. People who saw my post on the opening were pessimistic about the idea of a funky shop posting up in Uptown, which hasn't exactly been known to be a hub for retail.

Lo and behold, though, it's two years later, and O1NE is still thriving on the corner of Trade and Mint streets. And this Thursday, April 28, they'll be showcasing their spring looks at a fashion show at Butter. Doors at 10 p.m., show at 11 p.m. Go and support a local business.

As one local clothing designer recently told me, the clothes you wear make a statement about your personality. And Fashion Soul, presented by South End Soul this Saturday (a community celebration of art and design), promises to make you rethink what you're wearing. With three unique Charlotte fashion designers like Cigi Guzman (check out some pieces of her collection John T. Fellow, sponsored by Value Village), Luis Machicao (see an interview in our Nightlife section) and Joey Hewell, two locally owned boutiques like The Frock Shop and Niche, and an array of South End salons doing the styling, this event will showcase the diverse local talent we have here in the Queen City. No cover. Pre-party starts at 8;30 p.m., fashion show at 10 p.m. Parking lot between Dharma Lounge and Marigny, 1440 S. Tryon St. For more information, visit www.findyourcenter.com.

Beauty around the world: Une Belle Femme

Posted By on Wed, Apr 27, 2011 at 9:30 AM

Une-Belle-Femme

Une Belle Femme is the ultimate beauty event! Produced by myself, the StyleMayvin, Pretty in the Queen City, Flawless Makeup Art and CJ Wax Studio, this event offers attendees the opportunity to experience beauty brands from around the world — Kahina Giving Beauty, Boom! by Cindy Joseph, and Rain Cosmetics, to name a few. There will be tons of demonstrations, peach martini specials and networking with the who's who of the Queen City's fashion and beauty industry. Of course, I'll be there and you should too!

Our local special guest is Stanley Owings of iMpact Cosmetics. This line is sold on Shop NBC but he will be in attendance for the event and you can find out where to purchase the products locally. The fun begins tonight at 6 p.m. at Apostrophe Lounge, so don't miss your chance to win the coveted beauty basket with lots of goodies.

For entry to the event, all you need to do is bring a professional suit or complementary item that will be given to a local charity. What better way to spread to love of "beauty" than to offer someone else the chance to dress for their own success? For more information log on to www.stylemayvin.com.

Support in style: Extreme Makeover for the Woman's Soul

Posted By on Mon, Apr 25, 2011 at 2:11 PM

There's nothing like a girls weekend of style, and when it's benefiting a very worthy cause, how can you say no? There are tons of fashionable events going on this weekend, which reminds me that Charlotte has become a super stylish city but also still one that believes in giving back.

-1

This weekend, I've been invited to come out and enjoy the festivities with Soul Makeover Charlotte at the Ballantyne Resort. It's two days, jam packed with fun! On Friday, April 29, guests will enjoy a spa soiree. Then on Saturday, the empowerment luncheon and Stiletto Challenge. Now that sounds like a good time. For the challenge, attendees are required to wear their stilettos with a required 4-inch heel or higher in support of Fibromyalgia. There are so many women who suffer from this disease and it's a fabulous idea to have those ladies who still can get out there and strut their stuff for those ladies who cannot. Get your tickets today for an "Extreme Makeover for the Woman's Soul."

Sneaker store keeps it 'Fresh' in Plaza Midwood

Posted By on Thu, Apr 21, 2011 at 2:09 PM

As I walked into Fresh Exclusive Sneaker Boutique, located at 2001 Commonwealth Ave. Suite C, my eyes went directly to the crystal-inspired chandelier that hung from the middle of the ceiling and thought, "That’s something you don’t see in a sneaker store every day."

IMG_0662-1

After further admiration of the design, my mouth dropped as I looked to the left side of the store and noticed nestled nicely on top of its stand the Jordan 7 Bordeauxs. One would think it’s typical to see a pair of Jordan Bordeauxs in a sneaker store. Well, not necessarily ...  it was two days before the sneaker was slated for release.

With an avant-garde ambience and a shoe for sale before its release date, it hit me immediately that this is not one of your average sneaker stores. But I think that’s the idea Kelvin Wright, Lamont Reid and Brandon Roberts had in mind when opening their first storefront.

Creative Loafing: What was your design scheme or concept when you went into creating the look of your store? How did you want to differentiate from other shoe stores in Charlotte?

Kelvin Wright: To be honest, I had no say in the design of the store. I hired my friend Will Smith of Interior Motives and he came in and transformed the place. I believed in his vision and seen enough of his work to know he could give the store a wow factor. The store is really clean and fresh, which was a look we wanted to portray so customers will understand the price of our product. I’ve had people stop in the store because they see the look from the window and wonder what it is we are selling.

IMG_0658

Back when Creative Loafing profiled you and your business Fresh Exclusive, there was quite a few naysayers proclaiming your product to be fake, how did you combat that type of negativity?

It was crazy. I’ve done nothing and my product continued to sell. My celebrity friends and customers have verified my product and that’s all that mattered to me. But with anything positive you try to do, people will attempt to bring it down somehow.

When shopping for women's clothing, the one part of town you generally do not think to go to is Uptown.

Well, that's changed now, with the opening of Dressing Room, at 820 E. 7th St.

Here's the press release:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 19, 2011) Spring is in the air, and the emerging fashion community in the Queen City is in full bloom. Dressing Room is the newest addition to Charlotte's growing number of stylish clothing boutiques; located in Uptown at 820 East 7th Street, proprietors Angella Saunders and Natalie Manning are poised to make quite a splash on Charlotte's fashion scene.

Angella and Natalie are both veterans in the fashion industry. Angella owned and operated "Remix," a popular exclusive men's and women's clothing boutique in New York City on 8th Street in the heart of the Village. Similarly, Natalie owned "Natalie J" in Los Angeles on iconic Melrose Place. Both women are trendy fashionistas who have styled numerous celebrities and media personalities including Hip Hop artist Eve, actresses Raven Symone and Lisa Raye, just to name a few. The duo, who happen to be best friends in addition to being business partners, decided to make Charlotte their new home.

"We've been styling clients in the Charlotte area for quite some time, so it was only natural that we relocate here," says Natalie. "We are very excited about bringing our brand of style to the Queen City."

The grand opening event will take place tomorrow, Thursday, April 21, from 6 p.m.-8 p.m., hosted by our very own T. Strong. Enjoy complimentary wine, catered hors d'œuvres by Executive Chef Jay Jones of Chateau Noir, prizes and more.
