There once was a show. I randomly decided to go. It began with a DJ. Spinning hybrid new and old school, circa Marvin Gaye. Then the house band arrived. It was funky and joy was derived. Comedians and poets took the mic. They threw money into the crowd ... SIKE! The laughs were just as valuable, so this is easier than Geometry. Next month, you must show up for Cometry.
…at Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa. OK, so I realize that my effort at limerick is ridiculous at best, but the poetry that I drank via my thirsty ears on Dec. 7 far surpassed my amateur attempt. Cometry is a new (potentially monthly) event to be hosted at Neighborhood Theatre (and possibly Wine Up in NoDa as well), in collaboration with local promotions company Touch One Productions.
I purchased tickets for this show by complete chance, not knowing what to expect. I figured poetry … good + comedy … good + DJ … yes please + house band … alright alright = a combination that would inevitably be something to experience. I was, as usual, spot on.
Cometry is a showcase of local and imported talent in all of the aforementioned areas. I laughed, I grooved, I related, I enjoyed thoroughly. I’m also fairly sure that we had a little bit of what I can only refer to as “church” at the end … but fun church. Church with alcohol and curse words. Tickets are a bargain price of $15 ($10 in advance) and general admission seating is auditorium style. Cocktails and beer were served.
The only disappointment was the turnout, especially after I realized how amazing this medley of eclectic expression truly was. This is an event that Charlotte needs to get behind to ensure its survival. Those of you who are looking for something outside of the box of “more of the same,” keep your eye out for the next monthly installation of Cometry and get yo-self some tickets. The evening will include the same impeccably soulful DJ Japeto and house band BKC, and the line-up will consist of poets Tavis Brunson and Black Swan and featured comedian Jawan Charley.
