Bush backs pause in withdrawals from Iraq: After meeting with Gen. David Petraeus, the top military commander in Iraq, and U.S. ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crock, President Bush said he would reduce combat tours from 15 months to 12 months. The shortened tours would apply only to troops deployed on or after Aug. 1 and would not affect those currently in Iraq.

Beleagured American cancels 900 more flights: More than 2,400 flights with American Airlines have been affected since Tuesday in order to inspect and, if necessary, rework wiring to comply with federal safety rules.
