Film

Prince Caspian: The second movie based on the books by C.S. Lewis, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian is set a year after the events in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are sent back to a Narnia changed over time and suffering under cruel human leadership to help Prince Caspian defeat his uncle and gain his throne. The plot leans a little towards Shakespeare (Hamlet anyone?) and the allegory isn’t as cut and dry as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe (the evil of this story isn’t always as obvious as a White Witch). Don’t worry; we won’t tell anyone if you’re really going just to check out cute Prince Caspian actor Ben Barnes. Local theaters. www.charlotte.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Film. Find more in Film.

Music

Zach Deputy: South Carolinian Deputy writes warm and tropical tunes stitched with blues, roots-rock and a touch of soul. Shades of reggae and calypso color his coastal vibes, and that’s no wonder since he has lived and performed along the coast for years. In the end, it’s Deputy’s voice and fluid guitar-picking, with a nice world music layering, that makes it all intriguing. Double Door Inn. www.doubledoorinn.com. Find more in Music.

Arts

Robot Johnson: Is that a Robot Johnson in your pocket, or you just happy to see me? Make it both. The sketch comedy act is in the Q.C. to offer hilarious and offensive comedy. Comprised of former Talking Baby and Comedy Central guest Sean Keenan and Blaine Miller of The Perch Sketch Comedy Group, this show is sure to leave you with a bellyache. This performance is for adults only, so leave the kids at home and bring a sense of humor. $15, 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Duke Energy Theatre. www.blumenthalcenter.org. Find more in Arts.

Film

Orson Welles meets Kafka: Patchwerk Playhaus continues its journey into films based on works by Franz Kafka with Orson Welles’ version of Kafka’s The Trial. The film is said to anger some devoted Kafka readers, as The Trial was an unfinished novel destined to be destroyed after Kafka’s death. It was published anyway, and Welles’ film brings the edited and rewritten novel to the screen as only Welles can. Patchwerk Playhaus is an underground performance space located in a secret back room of Century Vintage in Plaza Midwood. Every Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., you can cozy up for a classic film for the grand cost of nada. Century Vintage. www.patchwerkplayhaus.blogspot.com. Find more in Film.

Music

Chatham County Line: Fresh off a Euro tour that saw them play Jools Holland’s BBC show, as well as an April appearance on NPR’s World Café, the Raleigh quartet’s blue-rock-grass profile continues to swell on the strength of their best release yet, the Chris Stamey-produced IV. Dave Wilson’s songs manage the neat trick of sounding both fresh and timeless; his smart narratives and the group’s genuine chops separate them from their more flashy roots-revivalist contemporaries. You wouldn’t think four guys playing acoustics on a single mic would generate much heat, but CCL does. Neighborhood Theatre. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com. Find more in Music.

Arts

Beatles Tribute Night: Climb out of your yellow submarine and join the musicians behind the Tosco Music Party for the 5th Annual Beatles Tribute Night at Spirit Square. And don’t expect this to be a demure occasion; Tosco and The Evening Muse sponsors encourage sing-alongs. 7 p.m. $6-$12. McGlohon Theatre. www.blumenthalcenter.org. Find more in Arts.

Film

Playing this week: Iron Man, Baby Mama, and Young@Heart. Visit your favorite theater and catch up on one of these flicks before the summer season picks up. You don’t want to be out of the loop, do you? Local theaters. www.charlotte.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/Film. Find more in Film.

Music

Mike Doughty: Before going solo, Doughty was best known as the frontman of the ’90s avant-garde posse Soul Coughing. His most recent disc, Golden Delicious, is rather straightforward rock, as compared to his more eclectic earlier works. There’s nothing wrong with that since Doughty can twist and turn a lyric into a fine song, where his nasally vocals add further weight to his muse. With Eric Crays. Milestone. www.themilestoneclub.com. Find more in Music.

Arts

The Little Mermaid: The Little Mermaid fable by Hans Christian Andersen is a depressing love story, but in the end conflicts resolve when the mermaid is granted an afterlife. It is no surprise that Disney remade the story by twisting its end into a happy one. In either version the stories about this mythical creature are fascinating to both children and adults. Whatever the spin Mark Diamond puts on his premiere of The Little Mermaid, it will be different. The ballet performance will feature stunning moves, decorative costumes and a mermaid who finds her feet. $27-$69. 2 p.m. Belk Theater. www.blumenthalcenter.org. Find more in Arts.

Food

Providence Café: Gorgeous dining room and comfortable New American cuisine offers a neighborhood spot and place to linger in Charlotte’s ultimate zip code. 110 Perrin Pl. www.providencecafe.com. Find more in Food.
