News Oil, military costs and you

The National Priorities Project, a group I'm familiar with because of their breakdowns of war costs, today released an analysis of how much dependence on foreign oil costs taxpayers in North Carolina.

Their verdict? N.C. taxpayers will spend $2.8 billion in 2009 for oil-related military efforts to secure foreign petroleum and reserves, while receiving only $527,000 for renewable energy:

The implications of this study are clear: If we are to decrease our global military footprint and reduce the potential for future conflict, we must decrease our dependence on non-renewable energy supplies.
