State pride?

Posted by Natalie Howard on Tue, Oct 21, 2008 at 11:14 AM

Not so proud of my fellow tar heels today.

It only takes a handful of people to give North Carolina a bad name and cement the stereotypes associated with our state and the South in general. The following two stories just depress and embarrass me, native to the state that I am. We all lose in this election if we as a people fail to be civil and humane.

Tires slashed during Obama rally

Sarah Revis, who lives on Wilkes Road, said the slashed tires left several women, including a single mother and a toddler, stranded and upset. At least four tow trucks were sent to move the vehicles from the Crown, Revis said.

“This is an embarrassment to this city and to me as a citizen,” Revis said. “I’ve seen women out here crying and men cussing. This is a crying shame.”

Lynne Steenstra said she thought that the slashings were scare tactics designed to keep her and others from supporting Obama.

Bear found dumped at WCU with Obama signs

A dead bear was found dumped this morning on the Western Carolina University campus, draped with a pair of Obama campaign signs, university police said.

“It looked like it had been shot in the head as best we can tell. A couple of Obama campaign signs had been stapled together and stuck over its head.”

Along the same lines, here’s a little story about me, a regular person, who almost started listening to country radio. Now don’t get me wrong, there is come great music on country radio, and many people don’t realize that. But there is the music, and then there are the on-air personalities. I happened to be listening yesterday morning, Oct. 21, at around 8:50 to the morning show on 96.9 the Kat. So the guy decided to tell this “joke” about McCain and Obama, about how some guy somewhere has Halloween decorations in his yard: two mannequins, one McCain and one Obama. So the punch line is that the McCain is dressed in a Klan outfit and is chasing the Obama. WTF??? This worries me on two fronts, first that somebody would actually put that in their yard, if it’s true, and second, that other people would find it funny! Am I a complete prude? Why do I not think this is funny???? I’m sorry, WKKT, but you have lost me as a listener. I am extremely disappointed.

Thanks for sharing, Hester. I totally agree -- that's NOT funny, by any means. WTF indeed.
