NSA snoops tried to wiretap Congressman

Posted By on Thu, Apr 16, 2009 at 2:12 PM

The New York Times published a story today that confirms the worst fears of critics of the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretapping.

The NSA, says the well-documented article, pretty much went hog-wild, breaking the law and wiretapping anyone and everyone they could think of. The most striking revelation, though, came near the end of the story, where it's revealed that the NSA tried to wiretap a member of Congress, for God's sake. And without a warrant, no less.

The congressman wasn't identified other than having been part of a Congressional delegation to the Middle East in 2005 or 2006. The only upside of this mind-boggling incident is that Congress may start to see the warrantless wiretapping issue as a personal one and actually stop it.
