Check in: Suicide threats on the rise

Officials are blaming the economic downturn and job losses as major reasons for the drastic increase in suicide attempts.

What can you do? Take threats seriously and contact the authorities if someone tells you they're thinking of killing themselves. And, do the same for yourself if you're experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Yes, the economy's bad. Yes, it's painful to lose your job. It's OK to talk about those things, what's not OK is taking your life. We'll make it through. Hang in there.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is spreading the word about suicide prevention resources.

In a news release, police said they had 10 reported suicide threats or attempts over the weekend. In the first 18 days of April, police responded to 81 reported suicide threats or attempts, the statement said. That's a 55 percent increase from the same period last year.
