Last fall, the auditor's office, then led by Republican Les Merritt, looked into state-funded trips that Mary Easley took to France, Estonia and Russia. The auditors determined that there was about $45,000 in “unreasonable” expenses, such as hundreds of dollars for caviar and a $27,000 chauffeured car that wasn't used. It concluded that the trips appeared to have little public benefit.
