Gingrich on Big Coal’s payroll

Posted by John Grooms on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 4:17 PM

He Whom We Shall Apparently Never Be Rid Of, AKA Newt Gingrich, runs a political advocacy group called American Solutions for Winning the Future (ASWF). That group has started running TV spots opposing the Waxman-Markey clean energy reform bill, which it refers to as an “energy tax.” The truth, as reported by ThinkProgress.com, is that the Congressional Budget Office analyzed the bill and concluded that it would cost less than 50 cents per day, and would sharply cut greenhouse gas emissions. Even more interesting is an investigation by the Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson, which shows that the ASWF is little more than a front group for the infamous Peabody Energy, the world’s biggest coal company. Gingrich & Co. raked in over $250,000 from Peabody, with the rest of his funding coming from an assortment of rightwing billionaires. If ol’ Newt wants to be taken seriously as a political candidate again, he’s going to have to be a lot more forthcoming about where his funds are coming from, or else risk being seen as the ventriloquist dummy for one of the planet’s most notorious polluters.
