Mecklenburg County's hail problem

Another day, another scam.

Listen. We know times are tough, but don't go screwing around with the insurance companies like this. You're not hurting them, you're hurting everyone. What do you think insurance companies do when claims spike? They pass the buck to their customers.

Dozens of Mecklenburg homeowners have filed insurance claims for hail-damaged roofs in recent weeks as state regulators examine potential fraud by contractors.

Investigators suspect some contractors are intentionally damaging roofs during inspections, leaving pockmarked shingles which insurance adjusters later attribute to hail damage, said Johanna Royo, a spokesperson for the N.C. Department of Insurance.

More than 100 homes in the Willowmere subdivision, near McKee and Weddington Roads in southeast Charlotte, have had their roofs repaired in recent weeks, according to Greg Anderson, a homeowner who is waiting to have his shingles replaced.
