Stupid Thing of the Week: Minors and moonshine

Posted by John Grooms on Fri, Dec 11, 2009 at 1:40 PM

Not too much doubt about the winner of the Stupid Thing of the Week award this time around. For pure idiocy, you just can’t top selling moonshine out of a daycare center. That’s what Gwendolyn Brown-Johnson and her husband, Artis Johnson, were charged with at their daycare operation off Tuckaseegee Rd.

What made the case even more award-worthy was Brown-Johnson’s Web site description of her center as a place where local youth are counseled to avoid alcohol and drugs.

The real topper, though, was Brown-Johnson’s explanation for the arrest, in which she claimed that she loaned $80 to a man from Gaston County, who gave her a package to hold until a woman came by to pick it up. The woman turned out to be an Alcohol Law Enforcement agent, who promptly arrested the daycare center owner. Brown-Johnson says she had no idea what was in the package, and that she had been set up by a neighbor who hates her for working with code enforcement in the neighborhood. So far, we've heard of no one who actually believes her.
