The Vagina Monologues

Carolina Actor's Studio Theatre

As V-Day approaches, so does The Vagina Monologues by playwright/writer Eve Ensler. The production, happening here in the Q.C. at Carolina Actor's Studio Theatre, is a celebration of women's sexuality and experiences. The monologues are taken from real interviews with women and layered with a tangle of emotions. Proceeds raised from the show go to help local organizations aimed at stopping violence against women and girls.

Comedy Funny shenanigans are in store as Charlotte Squawks: Six Degrees of Desecration invades McGlohon Theatre. Comprised of Mike Collins (WFAE Charlotte Talks - not Squawks - radio host) and Brian Kahn, along with bountiful singers, dancers and actors from Charlotte and the surrounding area, this troupe is known for their musical parodies about pop culture, including subject matter touching on NASCAR, illegal immigration, American Idol, and a whole lot more. more...

Decadence Project: "Valentines Burning"

Amos' Southend

Tonight, Amos' Southend transforms into a fetish-absorbed gothland during Single Cell Productions' Decadence Project: "Valentines Burning" party. The dance floor will transcend in movements, as folks strut their stuff, wave their glow sticks, and strap on their goggles for a mix of industrial, electronic, darkwave beats being spun by DJ Spider and others. In addition, the event includes erotic performances, a "renovated" VIP fetish demonstration area, vendors and appearances by alternative models and photographers. Though the name is different, this sounds a lot like SCP's late Purgatory to me, and that's not a bad thing ... not at all.

Food Stop by Killingtons Restaurant & Pub for a delicious selection of traditional bar foods served in gargantuan portions. more...

Nightlife This Saturday, burlesque, cabaret, and art collide at Dharma Lounge for what equals out to be a sexy shindig. Local arts group The Culture Initiative is behind the artsy Valentine-themed soiree, dubbed Hearts & Pin-ups. On a weekend where we’re supposed to celebrate matters of the heart, this event promises 10 lovely pin-up models and more than 20 local visual artists - capturing all they see to canvas through live paintings and by means of photography - as well as a tingling jazz-styled performance by Emily Estrella and The Hot House Heftones and music by DJs Scott Weaver and James Fedele. more...

Aisha Tyler

McGlohon Theatre

Aisha Tyler is probably best known for her time as the pipin’ hot host of Talk Soup, or for her lengthy list of TV appearances on popular shows like Friends, Ghost Whisperer, CSI, 24, and Nip/Tuck, among others. In her most recent TV endeavor, she lends her voice for the character of super spy Lane Kane on the FX animated series Archer. But, now she’s on a comedy kick. Currently embarking on a tour in promotion of her newest DVD, titled Aisha Tyler is Lit: Live at The Fillmore, she’ll stop in Charlotte for a performance at McGlohon Theatre tonight.

Benefit It should be a given that at The Ninth Annual Charlotte Bartender's Ball, exorbitant amounts of alcohol will be consumed. After all, it's an open bar comprised of top-shelf liquor and a full line of beers, as well as talented bartenders ready for some liquid-mixing action. But the annual shindig, happening on Valentine's Day and sporting a theme of "Made in America" this year, also features a dinner buffet. Folks attending must dress accordingly by following a semi-formal dress code, and yes, this means no wearing the flag. Money raised from the event goes to support Benefits Kids First of the Carolinas, so it's worth the price, even if you end up with your head in the toilet. more...
