Coming soon: Beerfest

Posted By on Thu, May 6, 2010 at 9:47 AM

Go. Drink. Be responsible.

More than 100 beers will highlight the Gastonia Grizzlies’ second Beerfest from 6 to 10 p.m. May 15 at Sims Legion Park.

No one is expected to sample every brew.

Still, having a game plan going into a beer festival can make the experience more enjoyable while allowing you to sample more of the goods, said Brian Beauchemin, president of the Carolina BrewMasters (which draws several members from Gaston County) and one of the past organizers for the popular Charlotte Oktoberfest.

“Start with the light beers,” Beauchemin recommends. “Pilsners, Kolsch’s, wheat beers — American and German — these beers are typically lighter in alcohol and body, so they won’t fill you up.”

End, he said, with higher-alcohol beers, such as Imperial Stouts, Barleywines, Belgian Tripels or Dubbles. They’re the ones that will have the most impact on your taste buds and your body’s alcohol intake.

“Drinking them early will only lead to an early exit,” he warned.

After Beerfest, you'll probably really enjoy this happy song:
