Furious Season promotes lively Charlotte literary scene

Are you a writer, poet (or yearn to be one) and wish to connect with others with a passion for the literary arts? Then you should look into Furious Season, a Charlotte based literary group that connects aspiring writers and offers them a chance to have their work published.

Started in January 2010, Furious Season is fairly new — although it has already published its first poetry and prose zine featuring 10 North Carolina writers. To celebrate the debut of its first issue, the group held a poetry reading, displayed art by a local artist and had music my local musicians.

Right now, the editor, Shannon Barringer, is busy working with associate editor Brandon Wright and designer Josiah Blevins to produce the second issue, due out this summer. The second issue will include short stories and poetry. I spoke with Barringer about what spurred the formation of the group.

What gave you the inspiration for this group?

Barringer: I was inspired to start Furious Season during a recent trip to Asheville. I was in one of my favorite restaurants, and they had a rack full of zines produced by individuals in the local arts community. I was struck by the fact that there were multiple zines dedicated almost solely to literary arts. I kept thinking that it would be wonderful if Charlotte could make that kind of offering. I'd wanted to compile a writing-based publication for some time and seeing that gave me the inspiration to make it happen.

What’s your vision for it?

My vision for Furious Season is to continually provide a space for talented North Carolina writers to publish their work in an exciting, vivid and accessible format. I want to see the literary arts community in Charlotte really come together and motivate and support one another to produce the best writing possible.

Where is the group now, and where else do you want to take it?

We just published our first quarterly issue, and we're busy working on our second. As for short-terms goals, a website is in the works. I want Furious Season to be further evidence of how full of life and truly talented the Charlotte literary scene is!

What can others do to support it?

Get involved. Submit your writing or encourage other writers to do so. We also feature a visual artist for each issue, so we welcome submissions for that as well. And purchase the Furious Season! (Future issues will be available at Book Buyers and potentially other venues. For now, you can email furiousseason@gmail.com to obtain the current issue.)

Note: On Sunday, May 23, Furious Season (in conjunction with Charlotte Viewpoint) is hosting Brainy Picnic — a book swap, reading and a picnic. The event, to be held at Independence Park from noon to 4 p.m., is free and open to the public. People are encouraged to bring a book of any kind for the book swap and a blanket to sit on. Sweet tea, watermelon, cupcakes and other Southern fare will be available. Readers for this event have already been chosen.

Those interested in having their poetry or short stories considered for the next Furious Season issue have until May 30 to e-mail their entries. More information is available on the group’s Facebook page.
