Help a neighbor, donate oatmeal

Posted By on Mon, Dec 6, 2010 at 12:57 PM

No, really: According to The Charlotte Observer, the Men's Shelter of Charlotte is feeding more people than ever with the same amount of resources. That's why they're asking the community to help them out by donating oatmeal, which is what the homeless men who visit the shelter have for breakfast. Or, if it's easier, you can donate money. The group is hoping 2,000 pounds of oatmeal will be donated and plans to share with one of its sister organizations, Center of Hope, a Salvation Army Shelter.

Carson Dean, director of the merged shelters, said about 30 percent of the men housed each night are clinging to manual-labor jobs. He sees a hot breakfast as one way to keep them working.

"We are trying to move them beyond homelessness, and men with a hot meal in them feel better, work better and stay healthy," said Dean.

The oatmeal campaign is directed by shelter volunteer Bob Bishop, who ran a smaller version last year that collected 1,500 pounds.

He sees it as a way average people can help out with the city's growing homelessness problem.

Here's another way you can help a neighbor out this holiday season: Donate blankets.
