McCain aide: 'For pure, blind stupidity, nobody beats Rick Santorum'

Former U.S. Senator Rick "Frothy" Santorum has long been known for letting his ambition outrun his smarts, but his latest gaffe is so absurd, it could damage his already none-too-rousing presidential campaign. Yesterday, Santorum outdid himself in the self-parody department, telling a radio interviewer that Sen. John McCain — who is probably the most famous victim of wartime torture in U.S. history — "doesn't understand how enhanced interrogation works."

Santorum’s incredible gaffe came in response to McCain’s recent Washington Post op-ed in which he condemned waterboarding and reaffirmed his belief that torture techniques have no place in U.S. policy. The best reaction we’ve seen to Santorum’s delightfully dimwitted quote came from Mark Salter, an aide to Sen. McCain, to wrote on Facebook: "For pure, blind stupidity, nobody beats Santorum. In my 20 years [working] in the Senate, I never met a dumber member, which he reminded me of today." You know, I was going to write more about this matter, but you really can’t improve on Salter's remarks, so we’ll see you tomorrow.
